CPAP vs. Oral Appliance Therapy for obstructive sleep apnea treatment at Comprehensive Sleep Care Center

CPAP vs. Oral Appliance Therapy?

CPAP vs. Oral Appliance Therapy: Which Is Better for Sleep Apnea?

If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you may be wondering: Is CPAP or an oral appliance better for sleep apnea?

The answer depends on several factors, including the severity of your sleep apnea, your overall health, your anatomy, and your ability to comfortably use the prescribed treatment.

At Comprehensive Sleep Care Center (CSCC), our sleep medicine specialists take an individualized approach to sleep apnea treatment. From CPAP and PAP therapy to Oral Appliance Therapy and other CPAP alternatives, our goal is to help patients find an effective treatment they can use consistently.

What Is CPAP Therapy?

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is one of the most established and effective treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP machine delivers pressurized air through a mask to help prevent the airway from collapsing while you sleep.

CPAP is commonly prescribed for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, although it may be recommended for other patients depending on their individual diagnosis and medical needs.

Benefits of CPAP therapy can include:

  • Keeping the airway open during sleep
  • Reducing pauses in breathing caused by obstructive sleep apnea
  • Reducing snoring associated with OSA
  • Improving sleep quality and daytime symptoms for many patients
  • Providing an effective treatment option across a range of OSA severity levels

However, some patients have difficulty consistently using CPAP because of mask discomfort, air pressure, dryness, travel concerns, claustrophobia, or other issues.

What Is Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea?

Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is another treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike CPAP, an oral appliance does not require a mask, tubing, or bedside machine.

A custom-fitted oral appliance is worn in the mouth while sleeping and is designed to reposition the lower jaw and help maintain an open airway.

Oral Appliance Therapy may be appropriate for certain patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and for some patients who are unable to tolerate or consistently use CPAP.

At Comprehensive Sleep Care Center, our sleep medicine and dental sleep medicine teams work together to evaluate patients for Oral Appliance Therapy and provide ongoing treatment and follow-up.

CPAP vs. Oral Appliance: Which Is Better?

There isn’t one sleep apnea treatment that is best for every patient.

CPAP is highly effective and is frequently recommended for moderate to severe OSA. Oral Appliance Therapy can provide an effective alternative for appropriately selected patients, particularly those with mild to moderate OSA or those who cannot tolerate CPAP.

The important question isn’t simply, “Which treatment is better?” It is:

Which sleep apnea treatment is most appropriate for you—and which one can you successfully use every night?

Your sleep specialist can consider your sleep study results, severity of OSA, symptoms, medical history, anatomy, previous treatment experience, lifestyle, and personal preferences when recommending treatment.

What If I Can’t Tolerate CPAP?

If you are struggling with CPAP, don’t simply stop treating your sleep apnea without speaking with your healthcare provider.

There may be ways to make PAP therapy more comfortable, including adjustments to your mask, pressure settings, humidification, or equipment. For appropriate patients, your sleep specialist may also discuss other CPAP alternatives for sleep apnea, including:

The right treatment plan depends on your specific type and severity of sleep apnea and other health considerations.
